FAQs

Q: The maximum e.i.r.p. on the UK 458MHz deregulated band is 500mW. Why would I ever want to use a directional antenna and have to turn my TX power down?

It is very true that to remain legal, the TX power of the 458MHz transmitter has to be turned down so that its value together with the gain in the antenna system does not exceed +27dBm (500mW). However if must be remembered that directional antennas when pointing correctly have excellent attenuation of same-frequency signals coming from locations off the side or behind the antenna. This goes to make your radio link more robust and resilient to interference than when using an omni-directional antenna.
