Q: What is the easiest way to line up a yagi antenna. I am using ER450 radio modems.

The ER450 and the ER45e Ethernet-capable variant have a very useful RSSI output on pin 9 of the serial port. It is a real-time buffered analogue voltage that is proportional to the received signal strength. This makes it very easy to line up an outstation’s antenna especially when it is part of a permanently-keyed base transmitter group.

Swing the yagi backwards and forwards to make sure that you are peaking on the main lobe and not a weaker side lobe.

The analogue voltage output is a very accurate reflection of the actual RSSI levels. See graph below.
